The uber-technician mentality doesn't have anything to do with art. Or jazz players like DeMiola (sp?) and John Pizzarelli. I wonder if bluegrass players respect Gilbert, Satriani, Vai, EVH, Malmsteen, etc. I have friends who only play acoustic, and if they play my rig with gain, they start producing all kinds of unwanted sounds. You have to be very learned to keep from making a lot of racket. With a lot of distortion, every little movement causes sound. Sure he plays with gain, which admittedly may hide a rare mistake. Who said anything about "hiding behind amplification"? Paul Gilbert can fret faster than just about anybody I've ever seen, and he's very clean. If a rock guitarist were to try that, he'd be ridiculed. Very fast (not lightning) and very tight. The whole ensemble was just violin players going to town. To add to my point, I saw a documentary on HBO the other night about a teacher who brings her violin students to play with the best violinist in the world at Carnegie Hall (I think it was Carnegie). I agree, bluegrass and jazz musicians are true musicians.
